Ian is a passionate advocate for civil liberties and criminal justice reform. This passion motivated him to switch careers and enroll in law school as a mature student, with the goal of being able to help ordinary people facing down the power of the state.

As a law student, Ian worked with low-income accused as part of the Law Students’ Legal Advice program. He also volunteered with the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association as a policy research assistant, where he contributed to the Association’s policy position paper on reforming the Police Act.

In his second year, Ian was selected to join the UBC Innocence Project clinic, which helps seek exoneration for the wrongfully accused. Upon completing the clinic, he was hired by the Project as a file manager for the remainder of his degree.

Ian started working with RTG Law Group as a legal assistant in February 2022 and began formal articles in September of that year. Throughout his articling period, Ian has assisted on everything from simple assault trials to second-degree murder sentencing. As lead counsel, he has helped clients fight charges of harassment, assault, breach of a court order, and more.
